Pros: non-MSG-laden food, great prices

Cons: inconsistent service

Pho 96 is one of many Vietnamese restaurants situated along the Asian-centered section of Buford Highway. One of the things that sets Pho 96 apart from most of the other Vietnamese restaurants is the sense of freshness from the ingredients. Also, the food does not seem to revolve around the use of MSG, so you don’t leave the restaurant with that dry-mouth feeling.

Our standard dinner at most Vietnamese restaurants usually involves an appetizer, some pho, and a dry rice-noodle dish. The shrimp rolls are an amazing appetizer, and the peanut sauce tastes like it was freshly made, rather than coming from a pre-packaged bottle. Both the pho and rice-noodle dishes offered a great balance of ingredients so that none over-powered the others. The BBQ pork over the rice-noodles were prepared perfectly leaving a very satiated feeling.

With repeated visits, the wait staff seems to be slowly finding their groove. One minor complaint, however, is that dishes tend to come out as they are ready, not according to the party order. Consequently, the dinner dishes did not come out at the same time. If you are eating with friends, one or more of you may have to wait while the others dig in.

Service issues aside, this should not dissuade you from enjoying some excellent Vietnamese food here.
